The Inspiration Behind Buddha Teas

John Boyd was born in the UK and grew up heavily immersed in the culture of tea. When he moved to America, he realised the available tea choices were limited and he was inspired to create an expanded variety of natural tea for fellow tea lovers! So he began to explore the possibilities of founding his own tea company.

While researching tea production, John was stunned to learn how heavily most tea companies relied on pesticides, fillers, additives, and flavourings in the creation of their products. He was concerned about the possible effects of these practices on humans and the environment so he was determined to offer an alternative. John chose ingredients that were grown organically or wild harvested to keep his teas as natural as possible. He’d also had a long-standing interest in the use of herbs as alternative medicine, an interest that inspired him to produce a line of herbal teas. By presenting single-ingredient herbal teas made from 100% natural ingredients, John hoped to provide the strongest possible benefit to be found in a single herb.

Why Buddha Teas?

The process of naming the brand was not an easy process as John wanted a name that would be able to communicate his desires and direction for the company. Thankfully, while in meditation he realised the name that he was looking for.

“Buddha Teas” was chosen not to reflect a religion, but a philosophy. One of the key aspects of Buddhism is living a life in harmony with the world, one of simplicity, generosity and filled with compassion for all life. As a company devoted to offering natural teas that are healthy for consumers and for the environment, this philosophy was a perfect fit. By taking from the earth no more than what we need, and giving back to it through recycling and compostable products, Buddha Teas would strive not to profit from the earth, but to honour it and its many blessings.

Once its identity and a purpose firmly established, Buddha Teas launched its first line of natural teas in 2009, and has continued to offer quality products ever since.
